It’s alive! IT’S ALIVE!!! And by “it,” I mean Darkmoor Village, the home of the Universal Monsters, which comes to life in Dark Universe at Universal Epic Universe. Don’t let the foreboding music and crackling lightning intimidate you — beyond this portal, you’ll find pulse-pounding attractions, subterranean restaurants, and eerie experiences that are well worth your bravery.

  • Dark Universe is home to mind-blowing attractions, interactive meet-and-greets, themed dining, and shopping experiences inspired by the Universal Monsters. It’s an incredibly immersive land; in 2025, it was awarded a Golden Ticket Award for Best New Theme Concept!
  • As you explore Dark Universe, you can unravel the lore of Darkmoor Village and spot hidden details that pay tribute to your favorite Universal Monsters.

Dark Universe is a world of full moons and thunderstorms, twisted curses and doomed experiments, and the near-constant suspicion that something is lurking just out of sight within the shadows. In other words, if you’re addicted to the feeling of the hairs on the back of your neck standing up, you’re in the right place. Read on for our complete guide to Dark Universe, including everything you need to do, see, and experience to become a full-fledged monster (or monster hunter) yourself.

What to Do in Dark Universe

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment.

What happens when you take Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, plus more, and put them all under one roof? In Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, you’ll find out for yourself — and it’s as thrilling as you’d expect. It did win the Themed Entertainment Association Award for Outstanding Achievement – Attraction, after all!

In this high-octane, motion-simulation dark ride, you’ll join Dr. Victoria Frankenstein (ancestor of Dr. Henry Frankenstein) and her version of Frankenstein’s Monster for an experiment deep in the catacombs beneath Darkmoor. Determined to restore the legacy of her family name, Victoria has captured all of the monsters plaguing the village in an attempt to control them. Just one problem: Dracula has broken free, turning your visit to Frankenstein Manor into an electrifying escape.

PRO TIP: Keep your eyes peeled for your favorite Universal Monsters! There are 14 monsters throughout this dark ride, so you’ll have plenty of chances to spot them.

Curse of the Werewolf

Two people laughing and riding Curse of the Werewolf at Universal Epic Universe.

Nestled in the dark forest bordering Darkmoor is a secluded wagon camp belonging to the Guild of Mystics. It’s here that you’ll learn of the Curse of the Werewolf — and if you’re brave enough to board this spinning roller coaster, you can face the curse yourself. You’ll speed and spin through a shadowy shed, but look out for gnashing teeth and glowing eyes in the rafters. One bite is all it takes to become a werewolf, and that just sounds dreadfully inconvenient.

PRO TIP: It’s always a full moon on Curse of the Werewolf, but for the added ambiance, I recommend riding this coaster after dark!

Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience

If all this talk of monsters has you itching to release your inner creature, good news: At Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience, you can do just that! With the help of the skilled artisans operating out of Dr. Pretorius’ old lab, you can be made up into Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Bride of Frankenstein, and more.

Who to Meet in Dark Universe

Ygor meet and greet at Dark Universe in Universal Epic Universe.

You know that eerie feeling on the back of your neck where you’re sure that you’re being watched? In Dark Universe, you may want to give that feeling a little more credit, because Darkmoor Village is home to a number of strange and unusual inhabitants. Don’t let The Invisible Man intimidate you: He’s just as willing to pose for a photograph as Ygor, Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s loyal assistant.

PRO TIP: You’re most likely to spot Ygor in the cemetery near the portal to Dark Universe, and The Invisible Man can usually be found lurking near the entrance to Das Stakehaus

Speaking of posing for photographs, you can snap a photo with two of the most legendary residents of Darkmoor, Frankenstein’s Monster and the Bride of Frankenstein. If your timing is right, you’ll find them behind the Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience — check the Universal Orlando Resort App for a helpful map to avoid getting lost in the shadows!

Dark Universe is teeming with mystery and intrigue. If you happen to see a violinist roaming the village, be sure to stop and listen for a spell; their song could help you unravel some of the history of Darkmoor. And over in The Burning Blade Tavern, you might have the chance to chat it up with a monster hunter over a Hunter’s Garlic Stake (my personal favorite snack in the tavern). And speaking of which…

What to Eat in Dark Universe

Das Stakehaus

People eating inside of Das Stakehaus.

You’ll find a wide array of human-friendly food on the menu here, from the classic Das Burger to a “Blood” Orange Chicken Sandwich, along with vegan and vegetarian-friendly options like Our Favorite Vegan Familiar’s Stuffed Cabbage and the Forager Salad. You can also choose from a variety of stakes — Fish on a Stake (salmon skewer), Bird on a Stake (chicken skewer), or Bits and Pieces (veggie skewer) — to really eat on-theme.

PRO TIP: Keep your eyes peeled for Dracula’s Daughter as you exit Das Stakehaus!

The Burning Blade Tavern

Friends outside of The Burning Blade Tavern.

The drinks at The Burning Blade Tavern? Fire. The Burning Blade Tavern itself? On fire. Literally: The windmill atop this eatery bursts into flames several times an hour, making it an easy landmark when you’re on the hunt for a specialty drink or quick bite. And when you arrive, you could meet someone on a different kind of hunt — after all, this is the favorite hangout of Darkmoor’s monster hunters!

What do monster hunters like to drink? Not your average cocktail: Choose from a Lagoon’ita (rum, limoncello, lime, blackberry purée, blackberries, and mint sprig), Darkthorne Mead (blackcurrant-boysenberry vanilla with pink peppercorn infusion), or Crossbow (Darkthorne Mead with apple cider) among other offerings. As you sip, be sure to check out the grotesque trophies of long-dead monsters mounted on the wall. (Maybe after you’re done eating, to be safe.)

PRO TIP: Are you a fan of The Invisible Man? (Who isn’t?) Try to turn yourself invisible by ordering his Monocane Mocktail, a delicious mocktail made with pineapple syrup, blue raspberry syrup, passion fruit syrup, emerald prism powder, and lemon-lime soda served in a souvenir beaker.

De Lacey’s Cottage

Frankenstein pretzel from De Lacy's Cottage.

When Frankenstein’s Monster was in need of a friend, he found himself in De Lacey’s Cottage. When you’re in need of a Frank & Friends Pretzel, head to the same shack, located just beyond Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment! You can also grab a sweet treat here. I’d recommend the Warm Hearted Cinnamon Bites, which are as delicious as they sound.

Where to Shop in Dark Universe

Pretorius’ Scientific Oddities

Merchandise at Pretorius’ Scientific Oddities.

Located next door to Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience, Pretorius’ Scientific Oddities is a macabre emporium filled to the brim with the odd and unusual. As you browse the shelves for apparel, accessories, housewares, and more items themed to your favorite monster, be on the lookout for some of Dr. Pretorius’ strange experiments that are still on display.

PRO TIP: Brush up on your knowledge of Dr. Pretorius by watching the 1935 film “The Bride of Frankenstein,” and check out our complete Epic Universe watchlist for more monster movie recommendations!

Manor Storehouse

As you exit Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, you’ll find yourself in the Manor Storehouse, where Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s assistants have stockpiled various odds and ends from around the Frankenstein Estate. Why not commemorate your escape from Dracula’s clutches with a souvenir or collectible? (I’m a big fan of the Bride of Frankenstein glassware, personally!)

The Guild of Mystics

The exterior of The Guild of Mystics.

The Guild of Mystics aren’t just fortune tellers — they’re also traveling merchants, and their wagons are home to a variety of werewolf-themed souvenirs to help you stave off the curse. Choose from T-shirts, toys, magical charms, and hand-crafted jewelry.

Hidden Details of Dark Universe

The Invisible Man at Dark Universe.

The Invisible Man isn’t the only thing hiding in the shadows of Darkmoor Village. Throughout Dark Universe, keep your eyes peeled for secrets and hidden details for Universal Monsters fans to spot around every corner. Some of my favorites:

  • As you enter Darkmoor Village, look to your left to spot a Mole Person hanging in a cage. This is your first sign that both monsters and monster hunters are on the prowl here.
  • You can admire a portrait of Dr. Septimus Pretorius, the mad scientist himself, hanging inside Pretorius’ Scientific Oddities.
  • A sign for Dr. Jekyll’s Apothecary hangs from one of the storefronts near Das Stakehaus. Not sure if I’d trust him for my pharmaceutical needs, but you do you!
  • Some of the monster trophy heads in The Burning Blade Tavern may look familiar to die-hard monster fans. That frozen alien head is quite a Thing to behold…
  • Inside the queue for Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, you’ll pass by tons of Easter eggs for monsters and monster movies past.
  • On your way in or out of the restroom — or the Toiletten, as it’s called in Darkmoor — you can spot a bench that makes for a particularly bloody (in a good way!) photo op.
