The minds behind Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) know, perhaps better than anyone, that the best way to terrify someone isn’t just a jump-scare. It’s to get in their head. After all, there’s nothing more chill-inducing than a good ghost story.
That’s why there are dozens of tales to be uncovered each year at HHN. Each haunted house, each scare zone and each show — and all the characters within them — have a terrifying backstory.
So we tapped HHN creative director John Murdy to spin a yarn about one of our favorite houses this year, Killceañera: Music by Slash. This isn’t just a haunted house, but a party: a quinceañera for an orphan named Lola. With the huge success of the “Monstruos” trilogy from the last three years of HHN, John and the team wanted to bring back the creatures of Latin American folklore fans know and…love? So expect to see some familiar faces, whether they be from previous HHNs or your subsequent nightmares.

Killceañera: Music by Slash: The Lore
The fiesta de quince años, more popularly known as the quinceañera, is normally a time for 15-year-old girls to celebrate their rite of passage from childhood to adulthood and all the people who made that journey special.
But not for Lola!
This troubled orphan with a dark and tragic past is planning a quinceañera unlike any other…a festival of death designed to take revenge on all the people who wronged her!
The setting for this “party to end all parties” is the burned-out ruins of Lola’s childhood home. It’s the place where her parents perished in a tragic fire during the height of the festival of Dia de Los Muertos (November 2, Lola’s birthday) years ago. Lola miraculously survived the fire, but was left with lifelong emotional and physical scars.
Orphaned at an early age and badly disfigured by the fire, Lola became an object of ridicule for her classmates. She was an easy target for bullies, who made her life an endless torment. Lola’s only refuge were the stories her parents once told her, tales of vengeful ghosts, malevolent spirits and fearsome monsters that would punish the wicked.
For Lola, these stories became an all-consuming obsession.
For in the eyes of her cruel classmates, she was a hideous monster. And now, that pitiless mirror would be reflected back on them!
As her 15th birthday drew near, Lola began to plot a way to take revenge. Since she had no parents, she would throw her own quinceañera party with her heartless classmates as her “Court of Dishonor.” The invited guests will be the ghosts, spirits and monsters from her childhood stories, conjured by Lola to be the perfect vessels for her revenge.
Fifteen candles…one for each of her victims.
It will be a quinceañera unlike any other, and no one will get out of it alive!
This is an original concept first conceived back in 2018 but never produced for HHN. With the success of our recent “Monstruos” trilogy, we’ve amended the story to include several characters from Latin American myths and legends (primarily from Mexico) that were featured in those houses, including El Cucuy, La Lechuza, Tlahuelpuchi, La Llorona, El Silbón and El Charro. We’re also introducing a character we haven’t featured before, La Mala Hora (which means “The Evil Hour” or “The Evil One”), an evil spirit dressed all in black that appears at midnight as a harbinger of death.
