Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) returns this fall to Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood with its renowned haunted houses and scare zones themed to the biggest names in horror and original stories, unparalleled live entertainment, and hundreds and hundreds of monstrous fiends. After having to make the difficult decision not to hold the event last year, you can bet this is one HHN you won’t want to miss. Look no further than the haunted house that was just added to the lineup, Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House.
This is right up your alley if you’re the kind of person who is obsessed with paranormal activity and loves to visit haunted places. Here’s everything you need to know about The Haunting of Hill House at HHN.
Is this a fan interpretation or the real deal?
It’s legit, folks. Universal’s creative Entertainment teams are collaborating once again with Netflix to transform one of their hit horror series into a real haunted house experience. They are working directly with Netflix on every detail from the scenic and character development to scare moments and more. The goal: create an experience that is authentic to the show, while maintaining the level of scares you can expect from Halloween Horror Nights.
It’s focused on the first season of The Haunting anthology series.
Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House is a supernatural horror show, which features five siblings in present day being haunted by the paranormal experiences they had at their childhood home, Hill House. The show shifts between the present and the past with flashbacks of the events leading up to the fateful night when the family fled the house. From what I learned in speaking with our Entertainment teams, Netflix is excited for the haunted house and can’t wait for fans to experience it. Can it be September already?
The haunted house doesn’t follow a specific timeline or character.
As mentioned, the show tells the story from several character points of view and two timelines. A challenging concept to bring to life within a physical and limited haunted house footprint. Instead, we’re making Hill House the main character of our story. You’ll enter the menacing mansion and slowly realize that you’re becoming a part of this ghostly world.
Speaking of ghosts, there will be LOTS of them.
The show has dozens and dozens of ghosts in it from the most recognizable ones like the Tall Man and Bent-Neck Lady to even mere glimpses of entities they hid in the background of scenes. You can expect the same from the HHN haunted house. It will be packed with both evil and trapped spirits all with the sole purpose of scaring the living daylights out of you. I can’t wait.
I know, I know. But will you actually get to see the Bent-Neck Lady?
The simple answer, yes, but this is HHN and we always take things to the next level. Not only will you see your favorite ghosts from the show, but you’ll encounter them in unique ways to elevate the scare and creep factor. I’ll keep these details in the dark so you can discover them yourself.
There will be a Red Room.
Throughout the show, you continuously see the ominous presence of a red door that can’t be opened with any key. You later learn (big spoiler here) that this leads to the Red Room, which is grotesquely described as the “stomach” of the house and can morph to calm the person it wants to “digest.” Isn’t it pleasant to think that you will get to be that person?
It’s all about building upon your fears.
This won’t be your typical HHN haunted house where it’s intense scares from the get go. It will start with more of those sinister, creepy vibes that make the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up. It will simmer and build tension with subliminal scares and then boom! The action hits you. Just wait until you experience the finale scene.
Keep an eye out for show easter eggs.
In every haunted house, the Entertainment teams adds in intricate details and props that only true fans would recognize. You may catch a glimpse of hidden gems like the Hill House blueprints and there may even be some hidden ghosts just like in the show.
You can expect The Haunting of Hill House merchandise.
If you manage to escape the clutches of Hill House, you can pick up a piece of themed merchandise as a memento of your survival. While I don’t have specifics on what you can nab — except for a T-shirt because there is always a T-shirt — stay tuned for more details about this year’s event merchandise for both coasts and the Tribute Store in Orlando.
